Technical guidance & FAQs
SCHUNK workholding and workpiece clamping
Workholding selection concerns the workpiece, machining forces and access required by the tool. Compare the appropriate chuck, vise, clamping block, pallet system or magnetic solution. Jaws and adapters form part of the setup and require exact interface verification.
Choose by the application, then the configuration
Start with the workpiece, machining operation and machine envelope. Consider where the cutting tool must reach and how the part will be loaded. Compare the complete setup, including jaws, adapters and locating components, rather than the clamping body alone.
For a replacement or repeat setup, record the existing clamping system and its interfaces. For a new fixture, identify the workpiece datums, support surfaces and tool-clearance requirements. Our team can help confirm the selected components and their documented operating limits.
Specifications that matter
Review clamping principle, workpiece geometry, jaw or pallet interface, actuation, machine envelope and tool access. Read each value with its units and the conditions attached to it. Where the drawing uses a reference letter or subscript, match that reference to the table instead of relying on the apparent proportions of the illustration.
Keep related dimensions together when reviewing the assembly. Overall size, usable length and mounting dimensions describe different requirements. A blank or dash is not a zero value, and an illustration does not establish a tolerance. If a required value is not stated, obtain it before making a fit or performance decision.

Read drawings and manufacturer documents together
Use the selected product’s technical table, dimension drawing and supporting manufacturer documents together. Check the article or EDP identifier and the document’s stated family or configuration scope. A general catalog page can provide context, but it should not override a current product-specific listing when the two disagree.
For a replacement, record the existing identifier and version as well as the required dimensions. For a new assembly, check both sides of every connection. Similar product names, a shared manufacturer and matching nominal dimensions do not by themselves prove compatibility. Follow the selected product’s installation and operating instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Are all workholding accessories interchangeable?
Match the named system, size and interface. Similar appearance or a common brand does not confirm a mounting or clamping fit.
What information helps select a workholding setup?
Provide the workpiece material, geometry, locating surfaces, machining operation and machine envelope. Identify the required tool access and how the part will be loaded so Tech Tool can review the complete setup.
Should I compare only the clamping body?
Include jaws, adapters, supports and locating components in the review. Verify the dimensions, interfaces and operating requirements of each selected article.
How should I identify replacement components?
Start with the existing system’s article number and version. Compare the manufacturer’s stated suitability, mounting details and scope of delivery rather than relying on appearance.
