Selecting cutting tools

Select the operation and tool geometry before narrowing by diameter or manufacturer series. End mills, drills, drill mills, reamers and carbide burrs serve different tasks.

Compare cutting dimensions, shank size, reach, flute count and coating on the selected configuration. Review manufacturer application guidance for your material and setup. A family name or representative image alone does not establish the dimensions of the tool being ordered.

Prepare an application review

  • Describe the operation and workpiece material, including the relevant condition or hardness when known.
  • Provide the drawing requirements, cutting depth, access limits and any toolpath or entry constraints.
  • Identify the holder, machine interface and available tool envelope before comparing shank and overall lengths.
  • Include the current tool EDP and the observed issue—finish, chip control, tool life or dimensional consistency—when asking about a replacement.

Questions before you select

Should I select by diameter or operation first?

Identify the operation first, then compare the appropriate tool geometry and dimensions. Milling, drilling, finishing an existing hole and deburring call for different tool selections.

Does a series image identify the exact tool dimensions?

No. Use the selected manufacturer EDP and its technical row to confirm diameter, shank, cutting length, reach and overall length. A representative family image may cover several configurations.

How do I choose a coating and flute count?

Use the exact series application guidance together with workpiece material, operation, machine capability and chip evacuation requirements. Ask technical support to review the setup rather than inferring suitability from the coating name alone.
