Odor Control: Stop the "Monday Morning Stink"

The Odor Essentials collection is the permanent cure for foul-smelling coolant. If your shop smells like rotten eggs or dirty gym socks, you don't need air freshener—you need a biological reset. That smell is Hydrogen Sulfide Gas, a toxic byproduct of anaerobic bacteria eating the sulfur in your coolant. This collection provides the System CleanersTramp Oil Skimmers, and Biostable Fluids required to starve the bacteria and keep the sump fresh for 12+ months.

The 3 Sources of Smell (And the Cure)

You cannot kill the odor until you kill the ecosystem that creates it.

1. The "Rotten Egg" Smell (Anaerobic Bacteria)

The Source: When tramp oil (hydraulic fluid) creates a seal on top of the coolant, it cuts off the oxygen. Bacteria that hate oxygen (anaerobes) multiply rapidly under this layer, releasing sulfur gas.

The Solution: Nimatic Belt Skimmers run 24/7 to break this seal. By removing the oil cap, you re-oxygenate the fluid, which naturally kills the anaerobic bacteria without chemicals.

2. The "Dirty Sock" Smell (Fungus/Biofilm)

The Source: A musty, moldy smell means fungus has grown inside the machine lines. It forms a slimy "Biofilm" that protects it from fresh coolant.

The Solution: You must strip the lines. Oemeta Cleaner 100 EC is a powerful system cleaner that peels this biofilm off the plumbing walls so it can be pumped out.

3. The "Chemical" Smell (Ammonia)

The Source: If the coolant smells sharp like ammonia, the pH has likely drifted too high, or the coolant is attacking yellow metals (brass/copper).

The Solution: Check immediately with pH Test Strips. If the pH is over 9.5, you may need to add water or switch to a "Yellow Metal Friendly" formula.

The Fresh-Sump Protocol

Don't mask it. Solve it.

  1. Skim (Daily): The #1 cause of smell is tramp oil. If the Skimmer is running, the smell usually vanishes within 48 hours.
  2. Oxygenate (Weekly): Stagnant coolant rots. If a machine sits idle for long periods, briefly cycling the pump helps re-oxygenate the fluid and prevents bacterial blooms.
  3. Purge (Yearly): If the smell keeps coming back, the infection is deep. Run Cleaner 100 EC for 24 hours to sterilize the sump, vacuum it dry, and refill.

Tech Tool Support

  • Lab Diagnosis: Not sure if it's bacteria or fungus? Send us a sample. Our Fluid Maintenance Lab can identify the specific strain and prescribe the correct biocide protocol.
  • Stocked & Ready: All cleaners, skimmers, and testing tools are stocked in our distribution centers for immediate shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use bleach to kill the smell?

A: NO. Bleach destroys the coolant’s rust inhibitors and releases dangerous chlorine gas. It creates more problems than it solves. Use a proper System Cleaner or Biocide designed for metalworking fluids.

Why does it smell worse after I clean the tank?

A: If you scrubbed the tank but didn't run a chemical cleaner through the lines, you left the "mother culture" inside the pump. As soon as you added fresh water, the bacteria re-infected the whole system. You must circulate Cleaner 100 ECbefore dumping.

Do biocides work?

A: Only temporarily. Biocides kill the bugs today, but if you don't remove the food source (Tramp Oil), they will be back next week. Skimming is the only permanent fix.
