Tramp Oil Control: Stop the Suffocation

The Tramp Oil Essentials collection is the primary defense against the #1 cause of coolant failure: Hydraulic Leaks. When way lube and hydraulic fluid leak into your sump, they form an airtight "cap" on the surface. This suffocates the coolant, starving it of oxygen and creating the perfect breeding ground for anaerobic bacteria (the source of the "rotten egg" smell). This collection provides the Continuous SkimmersSeparators, and Vacuums required to remove this oil instantly, keeping your coolant breathable, stable, and odor-free.

The 3 Dangers of Tramp Oil

It’s not just about a messy tank. Tramp oil attacks your process in three ways.

1. Bacterial Growth (The Smell)

The Problem: Anaerobic bacteria thrive in oxygen-free environments. A layer of tramp oil seals the tank like a lid, allowing these bacteria to multiply rapidly and produce hydrogen sulfide gas.

The Solution: Nimatic Belt Skimmers break this seal. By continuously removing the surface oil, they allow oxygen to re-enter the fluid, naturally killing off the odor-causing bacteria without chemicals.

2. Smoke & Mist (The Air Quality)

The Problem: Tramp oil has a much lower flash point than water-based coolant. When it circulates through the cut zone, it burns off instantly, creating blue smoke and heavy shop mist.

The Solution: Using a Magnetic Skimmer to pull the oil out means the only thing hitting the hot tool is water-based coolant, which cools rather than burns.

3. Residue (The Stickiness)

The Problem: As the water evaporates, the leftover tramp oil turns into a brown, varnish-like gum that coats the machine walls and finished parts.

The Solution: Coolant Vacuums allow you to suck out the "sludge layer" during maintenance, while skimmers handle the daily leaks, keeping the machine interior clean and non-tacky.

The "Zero-Oil" Protocol

Let the coolant breathe.

  1. Equip: Install a Nimatic Belt Skimmer on every CNC machine. It should run whenever the coolant pump is off(when the oil floats).
  2. Separate: For high-leak machines, use a Coalescing Separator (like the Skimmer 2 with Separator) to pull oil out while returning good coolant to the tank.
  3. Purge: During cleanouts, use Cleaner 100 EC to emulsify the old oil stuck to the walls so it can be pumped out.

Tech Tool Support

  • Sizing Help: Not sure if you need a belt or a disc skimmer? We recommend Belt Skimmers (Nimatic) for tight spaces and Disk/Magnetic Skimmers for wide, shallow tanks.
  • Stocked & Ready: All skimmers and vacuums are stocked in our distribution centers for immediate shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I run my skimmer?

A: Ideally, 24/7. If you don't have a timer, run it for at least 2 hours after the machine shuts down. This is when the oil separates and floats to the top, making it easiest to catch.

My skimmer is picking up coolant too. What's wrong?

A: You are skimming too fast or the belt is too rough. Nimatic Skimmers use a smooth, flat belt designed to grab oil but let water drip back. Adjust the speed dial down until you see pure black oil in the collection bucket.

Can I just use oil-absorbent pads?

A: Only for emergencies. Pads are expensive, messy, and they create hazardous waste. A Mechanical Skimmer pays for itself in a few months by eliminating the cost of pads and disposal.
