Clarify Your Coolant: Restore Emulsion Stability

The Cloudy or Milky Coolant Essentials collection is the stability toolkit for shops where the coolant looks hazy, "soupy," or inconsistent. While many coolants are supposed to be milky, a sudden shift to a "cloudy" or "separated" appearance is a warning sign. It usually means the emulsion is breaking down due to Tramp Oil OverloadHard Water Attack, or Improper Mixing. This collection provides the SeparatorsHardness Tests, and Mixing Tools required to restore a tight, stable, and predictable emulsion.

Diagnosing the "Haze"

Not all "cloudy" is the same. The type of haze tells you what is attacking your sump.

1. The "Creamy" Haze (Tramp Oil)

The Problem: When hydraulic oil mixes with coolant but doesn't float immediately, it creates a "mayonnaise" effect. This loose emulsion feeds bacteria and destabilizes the fluid.

The Solution: Nimatic Belt Skimmers or Coalescers are required to physically pull this oil out. Once the oil is gone, the coolant often clears up and the "rotten" smell vanishes.

2. The "Chalky" Haze (Hard Water)

The Problem: If you fill your tank with hard tap water (> 10 grains), the minerals react with the coolant oil to form calcium soaps. This creates a permanent grey cloud and leads to residue on parts.

The Solution: Use Hardness Test Strips to verify your water quality. If it's too hard, you may need to switch to RO water or a hard-water stable coolant like Novamet.

3. The "Separated" Haze (Bad Mix)

The Problem: Dumping concentrate directly into the tank ("glugging it") instead of using a mixer creates an "Inverse Emulsion." The oil doesn't bond with the water, leaving a hazy, unstable mess that rusts tools.

The Solution: Always use a Dosatron Mixer or Venturi Mixer. These tools use pressure to force the oil and water to bond at the molecular level, creating a perfect, stable white emulsion every time.

The Stability Protocol

Fix the mix, fix the stability.

  1. Skim: Run the Skimmer 24/7 to remove the "cream" layer of tramp oil.
  2. Test: Check Hardness and Concentration. If the water is hard or the mix is too lean (< 4%), the emulsion will never be stable.
  3. Purge: If the coolant has fully separated (oil on top, water on bottom), it's dead. Run Cleaner 100 EC for 24 hours, vacuum it out, and refill correctly.

Tech Tool Support

  • Lab Analysis: Is your coolant white, grey, or yellow? Send us a sample. Our Fluid Maintenance Lab can look at the droplet size under a microscope to tell you if the emulsion is healthy or breaking.
  • Stocked & Ready: All mixers, skimmers, and test kits are stocked in our distribution centers for immediate shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't soluble oil supposed to be milky?

A: Yes. Standard soluble oils (like Unimet) are milky white. Semi-synthetics (like Novamet) are translucent/hazy. However, if the fluid changes appearance (e.g., turns from white to grey/yellow), that is the danger signal.

Will hard water ruin my coolant?

A: Eventually, yes. It splits the emulsion. If you have very hard water, use Hardness Strips to monitor it and consider blending with distilled/RO water to keep the mix stable.

Can I fix a separated emulsion?

A: Rarely. Once the oil separates from the water, it is hard to re-mix. The best fix is to pump it out, clean with Cleaner 100 EC, and refill using a Dosatron to ensure it's done right.
